MORAL DILEMMA

You are the happiest person because you have an amazing girlfriend, whom you believe is always loyal to you and will never do anything to hurt you with another lover.
One day, you decide to come home from work early to surprise your girlfriend.
You sneak in the front door making no sound whatsoever, and as you ease the door back to shut it, you hear a noise coming from your bedroom.
You freeze.
You take off your work shoes and slowly creep towards the gushing noises from the bedroom, only to see a bulky man having intense sexual intercourse with your girlfriend.
You hear things she has never screamed rushing out of her mouth, and seems to love every single inch of it.
You have a milkshake of feeling running through you veins.

What do you do?

* Do you let her enjoy her ride until she is done? Leave the house, come back at the normal working time and pretend you know nothing. ( If you are thinking from her perspective it would be Hedonism, but from your point of view it would be virtue ethics.)
* Do you leave and smash your car against the bridge? Leave the house furiously, take a fast ride and release your anger by getting hurt. (Kantianism, you feel like its your fault, and taking it upon yourself, you feel like its your duty to end it all.)
* Do you walk in and interrupt, hoping that the bulky naked guy doesn't beat you up? Walk in the sexual act with a lot of noise so they notice you and cause a disaster. ( In this case you would use consequentialism)
* Do you start wondering whether she has other lovers? Is she the neighborhood hoe? (Intuition)

These are likely possibilities of what a normal human being would think of doing (Not speaking for anyone) I can say, that this is a very challenging moral dilemma because, you love your girlfriend so much that you cant let her go, but what you saw, twisted your feelings, therefore, what would you do?

Greg Cravens

When i first saw Cravens's video, i thought to myself... What he is saying is so simple but so genius. Creating ultimatums for the world to follow and treating this as a lottery ticket, makes it easy to understand and practical in the way we can act and think towards this world issue. An assumption has been made, that yes, we are the main cause of global warming, and yes, we are acting towards changing that. If i could control the thought of the world. i would go towards what am sure i know, and not gamble my way for either of the two other extremes. If everyone helps each other, yes, we would spend alot of money, but we are sure that we are safe and that our investments, no matter whether we are right or wrong, will act beneficially towards the well being of future man kind.

Is seeing believing

The argument of if seeing is believing can be greatly debated...

On one side of the argument, people believe that our cognitive senses cannot be relied upon because of the fact that our senses tend to not see what is in actuality, rather, they see what is useful to our perception of our environment. This can be proven by many optical illusions, such as those of Beau Lotto, which make us see that we cannot truly rely on our perception of reality as it is not what it actually is.

On the other hand, some (such as myself) argue that what other choice do we have? We are given with 5 ways of perceiving reality and that is what we base our decisions on. This is the way we have survived for all of evolution...

Looking on to the future, as technology advances, we may slowly and slowly reduce our dependency on our senses as we will be able to use different mediums to make sense of our environment.

Thought & Language

Does language shape how you think?
I think that this is a two sided question. Let me explain.
Since there are many languages in the world, where you come from and what language you speak can affect your mind thought. For example a person from Africa and a person from Europe can have very different mind thoughts both by the way they are brought up and also by the way the language is structured. I believe that people from Africa have a more communal thought (not to be confused by ''communism''. but communal in the sense of community) by the way their language is shaped, the structure and form of it allow the person to express himself as a person more into equality and part of a community, less pointed towards something. However, some one brought up in Europe, for example France, would have a very different mind thought, more of an individualist every man for themselves. I say this because i thought about how the language is structured: Je, Tu, Il\Elle, Nous, Vous, Ils\Elles. this is more of a way of thinking related to give orders or to define someone else from the community. So language does shape how we think.

The second side to this might be: How expressive a person can be. By the use of adjectives a person could be more expressive enriching the way you portray your thought. This second theory might not only be specifically for one self but for the receiver, and how vividly you portray your thoughts according to how much language you know. But this, does not mean how it limits your thoughts, but how it portrays your thoughts to others.

Can a concept exist without any words to describe it?
I would perceive that a concept can exist without words describing it. For example, i could feel the weight of a cube, but taken away my knowledge of gravity acting upon a mass, i would not know that what im experiencing is the effect of weight, but i would use my intuition to think something is behind what im experiencing.

1984

Why is the ruthless totalitarian regime, described in Orwell’s novel purging Oldspeak and imposing Newspeak? What assumptions are being made about the relationship between language and thought?

1. The target of the Newspeak was to inject a thought into peoples minds and make them believe what the writer or speaker wanted them to believe. Basically brainwashing the capacity to think for oneself. Controlling peoples minds makes it easier to be clear and straight forward!

2. The assumption being made by the relationship between thought and language is that: the more you know, the easier it is for you to think. And the fewer words you know of the language, the less the thought. (which i think is wrong) because you could still have a lot of imagination and thought within, even by not knowing how to express it in the language.

IDENTIFY A GOOD KNOWLEDGE QUESTION FOR YOUR CHOSEN REAL LIFE SITUATION

Knowledge Claim: The prism through which light passes refracts white light in to different colors.

Topic: Physics.

Ask an implicit question: What do we know about the refraction of light.

Formulate an open-ended question: How can you use the sense perception to see the different colors.

Formulate an explicit open-ended question: How can you use history and experience to prove scientific facts.

CREATING A KNOWLEDGE QUESTION USING THE LADDER OF ABSTRACTION

Knowledge Claim: Mr. Mussays grandfather says that fruits on his trees are ripening earlier every year and this must be dew to global warming.

Topic: Global Warming

Ask an Implicit question about the situation: What Is global warming doing to fruits?

Open Ended question: Why is global warming accelerating the ripening time?

Formulate an explicit open-ended question: How can you use evidence and visual perception to identify early ripening?

DP Subjects

  • The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students for success at university and life beyond. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The programme, has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.
  • Theory of knowledge develops a coherent approach to learning that unifies the academic disciplines. In this course on critical thinking, students inquire into the nature of knowing and deepen their understanding of knowledge as a human construction.

These are the subjects I have decided to take for my Diploma Course, and how I prioritize them in order of importance :

English: Firstly, I would place English. English is the language by which we comunicate and one of the signs of evolution infact is the apprehension of language. English is the international ''dialect'' we chose to speak, and without it we would not be able to communicate internationally.

Music: Music is everywhere, from the moment you wake up, to a radio or allarm, to when you ride in your car, mp3 players and ipods, the ice-cream truck around the corner with its jingle, tv in the evening, untill you go back to bed. Music is a great part of my life, huge infact, and i consider it very important. as a relief, as a getaway, to learn ect. there are so many different genres that everybody can have favourite songs, and its not just songs that make music, but messages, feelings, and rhythms that accompany you throughout your life.

Physics: Without Physics we would have no knowledge of how things work, innovations and the nature around us and how we have to behave around it to stay alive. The study of gravity, speed of light, masses, enable our world to move on, to know how distant i am from a destination, to know that i cant fly due to forces and that there are means of transportation that are not visible (sound waves). Of course, Physics is closely linked to maths, and to be honest i would place both maths and physics at the same level.

Math: From math derive physics concepts and calculations thats why I mentioned earlier that Physics and math are both very important, but what really gets to me, is that almost everything around us was made using maths. Simple calculations, angles, theorems... Concepts that enable us to make the world a better place, to innovate what we alrady have, to get smarter and create things that will help us get smarter.

History: The History of humanity is a very interesting subject. we can understand and look back at great discoveries, leaders that changed the world, the continuosely repeating cycle of life. I think that to better understand the origins of things you have to know a bit of history. It simply enables you to know that extra background information that makes you look at something under a compleately different light.

French: French as it is with English, is also a very important language. Firstly, it is a mean of communication, and secondly, it enables us to experiance a different culture and a different hystorical origin of the language.

The next three topics are three subjects imposed by the Diploma program, that enable you to get your certificate, They are compulsary:

CAS: The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the programme and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies.

TOK: How do we know?!? The TOK course identifies eight specific ways of knowing (WOKs). They are:

  • Creativity is interpreted broadly to include a wide range of arts activities as well as the creativity students demonstrate in designing and implementing service projects.
  • Action can include not only participation in individual and team sports but also taking part in expeditions and in local or international projects.
  • Service encompasses a host of community and social service activities. Some examples include helping children with special needs, visiting hospitals and working with refugees or homeless people.
  • language
  • sense perception
  • emotion
  • reason
  • imagination
  • faith
  • intuition
  • memory.

Extended Essay: The extended essay of 4,000 words offers the opportunity for IB students to investigate a topic of special interest, usually one of the six DP subjects  chosen, and acquaints them with the independent research and writing skills expected at university.

The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.
