1984

Why is the ruthless totalitarian regime, described in Orwell’s novel purging Oldspeak and imposing Newspeak? What assumptions are being made about the relationship between language and thought?

1. The target of the Newspeak was to inject a thought into peoples minds and make them believe what the writer or speaker wanted them to believe. Basically brainwashing the capacity to think for oneself. Controlling peoples minds makes it easier to be clear and straight forward!

2. The assumption being made by the relationship between thought and language is that: the more you know, the easier it is for you to think. And the fewer words you know of the language, the less the thought. (which i think is wrong) because you could still have a lot of imagination and thought within, even by not knowing how to express it in the language.
